Types of Roofing Materials You Can Choose for Your Home roofing materials

roofing-materials-1

According to an 80’s song, contentment is being able to eat three times a day and having a roof that doesn’t leak. We hardly notice our roofs until they are damaged or allowing the elements into our homes. Knowing the right kind of material for your roofing is important in order to know how durable they are, how many years are they good for, and how environmentally friendly they are.

Things to Consider Before Buying Materials:

  1. BudgetTo know how much you will spend on materials, you will need to calculate the area of your roof by “squares.” Square is the term that contractors use to mean a 10 square foot by 10 square foot space. If your house is over 200 square meters or around 2,500 sq.ft., contractors will assign around 20 squares or less to cover your roof. Expect to pay anywhere from 1,500 up to 40,000 depending on the quality and type of the material you plan to use.
  2. Roof Load CapacityThe weights of roofing materials will vary depending on their type. You will need to check how much weight the supports in your house can hold up before deciding on what material to use. Factor in the amount of snow your roof catches during the winter. Estimating the load capacity of your supports will help in keeping the structure of your home from collapsing in the future.
  3. Environmental ImpactHaving an environmentally friendly roofing material has its benefits aside from having minimal impact to the environment. High ratings in this category can mean that the material also has the ability of helping keep the inside of your house cooler in the summer and well insulated in the winter.

Types of Roofing Materials:

  • Asphalt Composite Shingles – asphalt shingles are usually the cheapest type of material used for roofing. They are usually paper or fibreglass mats which have asphalt mixed in. These types of shingles are said to be recyclable but often find their way into landfills, casting doubts on their impact on the environment.
  • Wooden Shakes and Shingles – wooden shakes and shingles usually come in cedar and can be recycled into mulch after they have served their purpose. Unless treated, they are not fire-resistant and are often banned by fire protection agencies for use as roofing.
  • Clay Tiles – Clay tiles are heavy on the budget but have good fire and wind resistance. Although the material itself is brittle, they last quite long. Since clay is heavy material, roof supports need to be reinforced before installation.
  • Slate Tiles – Installing slate tiles requires impressive skill; and the material itself is expensive. What is great about slate is its longevity. Slate tiles can last up to a hundred years and then reused for a hundred more
  • Concrete Shingles – Concrete shingles are made from a mix of cement and sand. Although not as expensive as clay tiles, concrete shingles tend to be heavy. They have good fire resistance while only having moderate wind resistance.
  • Metal Roofing – Metal can come in sheets and shingles. They are moderately priced depending on the kind of metal used in making them. Metal roofs require little maintenance; but since their grooves can easily capture leaves, they require some cleaning from time to time. They can also be quite noisy when they encounter wind or rain.
